Bacterial Vaginosis

What is a Bacterial Vaginosis?

Bacterial vaginosis (BV) is a bacterial infection which can cause pain, soreness, and gray, white, or green discharge that smells bad. It is caused by an overgrowth of bacteria in the vagina.

What are the symptoms?

  • Gray or thin white vaginal discharge

  • Itching, Pain or burning in the vagina

  • Strong fish-like odor

  • Itching around the vagina

  • Burning when peeing

How is it diagnosed?

In order to diagnose BV, a vaginal exam by a healthcare provider is required and fluid collected from the vagina is tested.  This process is similar to a regular gynecological checkup.

How is it treated?

Bacterial vaginosis can be treated with antibiotics. 

Data, statistics, and research

Bacterial vaginosis is the most common vaginal problem for women and people assigned female at birth (AFAB) ages 15 to 44. In fact, about 35% of people with a vagina will get BV.
